Today at the IRC's Miami office, I met a lovely family from New Orleans. Ted and Roxanne are trying to get back on their feet after leaving the city when Katrina hit last month. After staying with friends and family and living in various hotels in the Miami area, they decided to establish some roots here. Ted is originally from Miami and left in 1994 when Hurricane Andrew hit. Back then, he decided to start his new life in New Orleans, where he met Roxanne. They now have two children, Julian and Malichi, and are rebuilding their lives in Miami – but for Ted, it’s the second time. IRC is helping families like theirs with cash assistance for housing and employment assistance. It’s inspiring to see the hope and resilience of people like Ted and Roxanne. “It’s a challenge because it’s like rebuilding my life, but it’s also a chance to start anew,” says Roxanne.
