Katrina - A family's good news

Louisiana native Lisa David, now the IRC's regional refugee resettlement director in Dallas, traveled back to her home state to join an IRC team supporting local relief efforts for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3

Sunday, September 4

Good news today – my parents inform me that Anita, the evacuee they have taken in has learned that her father was found alive! She does not yet know where he is and is working on trying to trace him through the various online sites and is in touch with extended family by phone – when you can get through. Phone service is still very unreliable. It seems that the system works a little better every day, but is simply overloaded with the volume of calls.

As the massive evacuation effort in New Orleans is winding down, it does seem like more and more people are slowly beginning to reunite. Without any formal registration system however, I hear of a lot of people in Anita’s position – they are learning that family and friends made it out okay, but don’t know where they are located.
