Photo Share - Katrina Survivors Starting Over in Georgia
Photo: International Rescue Committee

From Ellen Beattie, director of the IRC resettlement office in Atlanta. The IRC’s 22 regional resettlement offices, with decades of experience helping refugees rebuild their lives in the United States, are on hand to assist victims of the hurricane disaster.

The IRC's Asha Omar (left, wearing name badge) and Louisa Assibi (right) assist a displaced Louisiana family at an American Red Cross office in Decatur, GA.

The lines are very long at the office, which is teaming with evacuees, mostly from Louisiana.
Asha and Louisa are two of the IRC Atlanta staffers volunteering to help the Red Cross conduct
interviews and fill out the paperwork families need to access shelter, an emergency credit
card, prescription drugs and other services.
