IRC financial literacy classes are helping Somali Bantu refugees who have resettled in Boston get to know the American banking system and the basics of budgeting and paying bills.

One of these classes meets twice a week and focuses on the needs of refugee mothers. While an IRC volunteer looks after their children, these moms get hands-on practice writing checks, using a calculator and filling out deposit slips. They also have a chance to take field trips to Citizens Bank where they learn one of the most essential skills for life in the United States--how to withdraw money at an ATM.
