Public school students, teachers, principals, staff, and parents in New York City have raised more than $300,000 for the International Rescue Committee and the American Red Cross to help children in areas devastated by December's tsunami. The schools held bake sales, coin drives and other creative fundraisers during the 12-week drive.

Back in February, NYC Schools officials invited staff from IRC headquarters to a Chinese New Year celebration at P.S. 130 M in New York's Chinatown. After a performance by students, they presented a check with proceeds from the school's fundraiser to IRC's president, George Rupp. Not only did the school want to help tsunami surviviors, they told Rupp, they also wanted to "give back" in thanks for all the support they received from the public after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the nearby World Trade Center.
