A tsunami drawing by a Afghan refugee child assisted by the IRC in Pakistan After the December 26 tsunami, Afghan refugee children attending 27 International Rescue Committee schools in Pakistan were looking to find ways to reach out to children in Indonesia affected by the disaster. IRC teachers encouraged them to draw pictures, write letters or say prayers. The children were not encouraged to donate money, but they were told that they could give one rupee toward tsunami relief if they wanted to. Two months later, the IRC’s education program had raised 98,727 Pakistani rupees – $1,660 – from children, teachers, staff and Pakistani citizens who were moved by the students’ effort.
