Deddy Kaligis (left) is a Christian. Aziz Salama is a Muslim. Not too long ago they would have been enemies. At an IRC youth center in Kasiguncu, in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province, they snapped a self-portrait and recalled the ethnic violence that tore their community apart:

“I remember people in my village told me that if you don’t join us to fight, you’re not a Christian,” said Deddy, 22. “All I wanted to do was finish my high school exams.”

“Muslims came from Java and told me that I had to defend my religion," said Aziz, 24. "If I didn’t I'd become a ‘kafir’ – a non-believer and an outsider.”
