Photo: Danya Pastuszek/IRC From Danya Pastuszek, special projects manager at the IRC refugee resettlement office in New York: On January 20th, Richard came to my office, smiling, and pulled a W-2 out of his bag. He wasn’t sure what to do with it, but he knew that it meant that he had worked hard all year. Like many refugees who come from countries with barter economies, Richard has had to work hard since arriving in New York City in March 2003 to navigate subway transfers and grocery stores, to determine the value of food stamps, and to calculate relationships between bills and loose change. Taxes were a whole new ballgame! That’s why 11 IRC resettlement offices offered free tax preparation assistance this year, helping refugees receive income tax credits and other refunds. In this picture, Richard works with two IRC New York resettlement volunteers at a monthly job skills workshop. Busi and Maren show Richard how to fill out W-4s and read paychecks.
