Singkil, Indonesia, a coastal community largely spared by the December 26 tsunami, was hit hard by the 8.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28.

We arrived expecting to see dozens of felled buildings but instead found ubiquitous pools of water that flooded people out of their homes.

In the early afternoon we begin distributing the shelter items we have brought along with us.

One by one, the names of heads of households are read off a sheet by community leaders. The people called come for their blankets and plastic sheeting and hold them close to their chests as if they were the most precious items on earth.
