Singkil is a small coastal town located about 70 kilometers from the epicenter of Monday's 8.7 quake. Although heavily damaged, it was overlooked by international aid organizations in the rush to reach the islands of Simeulue and Nias.

Our team consisting of a clinical health specialist, a logistician and an environmental health engineer is to meet up with another doctor, a nurse and our field coordinator who arrived here by boat with 5 tons of supplies.

We begin distributing supplies to build shelters as the doctors set to work treating the injured.

After seeing IRC doctor Valerie Bemo, one little girl is smiling from ear to ear. She sits on the mosque banister showing off her new bandage to all passers-by. Photo Essay
