From Farnan Ullah, emergency coordinator in northern Pakistan, where the IRC is distributing food and emergency supplies to more than 17,000 stranded families living in remote valleys:

Most access roads are blocked by either snow, land slides or avalanches. Some are open but very dangerous to drive on. Distribution of food is only possible by donkeys in some areas.

The situation in these areas is further aggravated by the recent torrential rains. People are dying because of shortage of food, cold weather and no medical facilities.
