Photo: Gerald Martone/The IRC Four years into the war in Iraq, the violence has forced nearly 4 million people from their homes. 50,000 Iraqis are fleeing every month for neighboring Syria, Jordan and Turkey where they must endure unsettled, often squalid, conditions living as refugees. In the latest issue of Newsweek, the IRC's Anna Husarska talks with Abu Omar, a refugee from Baghdad. Although his Sunni name marks him for death in today's Iraq, the United States won't offer him protection because it considers him a supporter of terrorism. Why? Because of ransom he paid to free his kidnapped children, ages 9 and 11. Anna explains why this law should be changed.
