Photo Share - Kharghaltan

Although the village of Kharghaltan is only 30 kilometers from the western town of Herat in Afghanistan, it is very isolated. The village, a cluster of small clay houses, is far from the main road and several kilometers from the nearest settlement. I was going there with Karima Sorkhabi, who manages the IRC’s child programs here. We were driving through an empty semi-desert against the beautiful backdrop of a majestic mountain range when I suddenly spot a woman and her son on the road. They must have walked for hours to reach Kharghaltan. More photos
