Two new IRC-run women’s centers are proving popular with women living in earthquake-ravaged Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir (north of Pakistan). The centers offer vocational training, literacy, health classes and counselling to quake survivors.

Women visiting the center in Atyasa said they appreciated the chance to learn a skill like embroidery, but even more important is the opportunity to meet other women and share their experiences.

The earthquake greatly affected the day-to-day lives of women. Talking to others in the same situation helps women know they are not alone. Younger women tell me that they like coming here to talk to older women—they feel they can learn a lot from them. It's a very simple thing, but it really can make a huge difference to women here just to be able to talk about what they are going through. — Laila Khan
