International hockey stars Sohail Abbas, from Pakistan, and Gert-Jan Derikx, from Holland, visited IRC Pakistan earthquake programs in Muzaffarabad last week to see how reconstruction is progressing. Both played in a charity match last October which raised more than 41 million euros for the earthquake response. The goal of their visit was to report back to the Dutch public on how the money raised had been spent.

Sohail Abbas told Laila Khan, IRC's head of communications in Pakistan, that the scale of the devastation – as well as the sheer challenges facing the Pakistan government – were much greater than he had first thought. He said the visit had opened his eyes to the problems of remote communities.
